GEEDITOR / PNG → ICNS
About this conversion · PNG → ICNS
Create a ICNS icon from PNG for a project that specifically needs that icon container. Start with a square design and inspect it at the size where it will be used; a detailed photograph rarely works well as a tiny icon.
Choose “Icon dimensions”: ICO accepts 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 px; ICNS accepts 128, 256, 512 or 1024 px. The picture fits within a square without stretching. One conversion creates one size, not a multi-resolution icon set.
This image route exports pixel data, not a repair of the original. Layers are flattened and animated or multipage files use one frame or page. Color depth, profiles and metadata may change; lost detail cannot be recovered by changing the extension.
How to convert
- Click “Choose files” and select the original PNG file. Start with one file when comparing settings.
- Check that the output selector shows ICNS. The instructions here describe this choice; changing the output can change which settings apply.
- Open “Conversion settings” below the file area before starting conversion. Set only the options relevant to the output described below.

- Click “Convert files”, then save the result from its file row. “Download all” puts completed files into a ZIP; it does not combine their contents.
- Open the downloaded ICNS image at 100% zoom. Compare dimensions, orientation, fine text, transparent edges and colors with the PNG original before uploading it elsewhere.
