GEEDITOR / TAR → TGZ

About this conversion · TAR → TGZ

Repack a TAR archive as TAR.GZ when the receiving tool needs a different package format. The files inside keep their content; this does not convert the documents, photos or programs stored in the archive.

Archive processing is limited to 1,000 entries, 50 MB per entry and 200 MB after expansion. Encrypted archives, unsafe paths and TAR links or special entries are rejected. A small compressed file can still exceed these limits.

TAR and TAR.GZ output use USTAR. Ownership and timestamps are reset, and unsupported long paths or link entries can fail. Use ZIP output when USTAR path limits are unsuitable.

Worked example
Input: TAR → photo.jpg
Output: TAR.GZ → photo.jpg

How to convert

  1. Click “Choose files” and select the original TAR file. Start with one file when comparing settings.
  2. Check that the output selector shows TAR.GZ. The instructions here describe this choice; changing the output can change which settings apply.
  3. Click “Convert files”, then save the result from its file row. “Download all” puts completed files into a ZIP; it does not combine their contents.
  4. Extract the downloaded TAR.GZ with a compatible archive application. Compare file counts, paths and several file contents with the TAR original. Ownership, permissions or timestamps may change during repacking.

Frequently asked questions

Does this also convert the files inside the archive?

No. Repacking changes the archive container, not the files inside it. A photo.jpg inside a ZIP remains photo.jpg after conversion to TAR. Archive ownership, dates and other metadata are not guaranteed to survive.

What should I do when a file exceeds the limits?

Archive processing is limited to 1,000 entries, 50 MB per entry and 200 MB after expansion. Encrypted archives, unsafe paths and TAR links or special entries are rejected. A small compressed file can still exceed these limits.

What should I check for this particular source format?

TAR and TAR.GZ output use USTAR. Ownership and timestamps are reset, and unsupported long paths or link entries can fail. Use ZIP output when USTAR path limits are unsuitable.
